Goldens are professional actors whose entire repertoire is ‘starving orphan.’ Believe the body, not the performance: extra weight is the single biggest owner-controlled factor in this breed’s joint disease, and a lean golden lives measurably longer and moves better into old age.

Portion like you mean it

Bag labels overfeed most pets — start at the low end for your dog’s target (not current) weight, measure with an actual cup, and count training treats as part of the day’s food. Using a portion of daily kibble as training pay is the golden cheat code: they honestly do not mind.

The shape check

Monthly, from above: a visible waist behind the ribs. From the side: a tucked-up belly. Hands on: ribs easy to feel under a light fat layer, like the back of your hand. Can’t feel ribs? Trim 10% off portions and re-check in three weeks. When in doubt, your vet can score body condition in two minutes.
