Surviving the Land-Shark Phase
Golden puppies bite. A lot. Here is why it is normal and how to get through it with your sleeves intact.
Golden retriever puppies are mouthy even by puppy standards β they were bred to carry things gently, and they learn what ‘gently’ means by practicing on everything, including you. Biting between 8 weeks and 6 months is developmental, not dominance, and it does not mean your sweet golden is broken.
Redirect, don’t punish
Keep a soft toy within arm’s reach at all times. The moment teeth touch skin, go still and boring, then offer the toy and get animated the second the pup takes it. You are teaching a simple rule: teeth on people ends the fun, teeth on toys starts it.
Watch the witching hour
Most land-shark rampages happen when a puppy is overtired β classically around 7β9 PM. If the biting suddenly gets frantic, the answer is usually a nap in a quiet spot, not more correction. An overtired golden puppy cannot make good choices, same as an overtired toddler.
π‘ Golden Hour tip
Track when the biting peaks for three days. If it clusters at the same hour, schedule a nap 30 minutes before. This fixes more ‘aggressive puppy’ worries than any training trick.
