πΎ TRAINING Β· 5 MIN READ
Your Golden Is Easy to Train. Don’t Waste It.
Food motivation plus people-pleasing is a superpower β if you keep sessions short and the wins cheap.
Goldens sit near the top of every trainability ranking for a reason: they are food-motivated, handler-focused, and forgiving of our mistakes. The flip side is that an under-trained golden is pure wasted potential β all that eagerness gets spent on counter-surfing instead.
Three minutes, three times a day
Skip the 45-minute session. Three tiny sessions β before breakfast, before dinner, before the evening walk β outperform one long one. End on a success while the dog is still hungry for more. A golden who thinks training might happen at any moment starts offering good behavior speculatively, which is exactly what you want.
Pay in real currency
Kibble is fine at home; the park requires cheese, chicken, or hot dog. The distraction level sets the wage. Being ‘too proud to bribe’ just means your dog learns that listening outdoors does not pay.
π‘ Golden Hour tip
Name and reward calm, not just tricks. A golden that gets a quiet ‘yes’ and a treat for lying down while you work will invent settling as a hobby.
General guidance from golden retriever owners, not veterinary advice. If your dog is sick or hurt, call your vet.
